How to Make the Best of Your Online Networking

The best way to Network with the people you work with is to make it a habit. Make it a part of your day, and you’ll find that your networking time doesn’t have to feel like a race towards the door. Check in with old friends, learn something new, and set some new ones in motion. You’ll become aware of the people around you who are interested in the same things as you. You can connect with them at events or through LinkedIn groups and other channels too. You’ll discover brand new friends while setting up opportunities for future connections—and maybe even get introduced to someone who can help you out with future projects!

Networking events

When you’re working with other professionals, you tend to meet a lot of people. Whether you work in marketing, sales, or customer service, chances are you’ll attend networking events to meet new people. You can check out event calendars to see what’s going on and which ones are the best to Network with. You can also bring a friend who’s interested in your field to meet new people, and you can invite them to Network with you after the event. You might also try to attend more social events with coworkers. Whether you’re in a larger company or still in school, you’ll unlikely make many friends in an office environment. Those social events might be a perfect opportunity to meet new people who share your interests or have skills you’re looking for.

Network with people at your company

The best way to Network with people at your company is to let them become the Networker. Networking events are great, but you can also try to find opportunities to Network with coworkers at your desk or in the cafeteria. If you’re in a larger company, try to find ways to Network with people in smaller departments. You should spend the majority of your time connecting with people you want to Network with, not focusing on how many hours you have left until you’re supposed to be home for dinner. When you do Networking, you should be actively looking for opportunities to Network with people. You can’t just walk up to anybody you meet and start a conversation. You have to be looking for people who are interested in talking to you, and you have to actively seek those out. When you’re looking for opportunities to Network, look for ways to make the encounter stand out. If you know there’s a talk-to-me event in the lunchroom every Monday, go to the meeting and say you were looking for talk-to-people events. If you know there’s a club meeting every Thursday, go to the meeting and say you were looking for other things to talk about. You can also look for opportunities to Network in areas where you spend the most time. If you work an 8-hour shift, you may not have the energy or the time to Network during your free hours. Find ways to Network during your free hours, or find a friend who can help you out.

Set up a LinkedIn group for your industry

LinkedIn is a great platform for networking and learning, and it’s one of the few places where people of all ages and backgrounds can come together and be themselves. You can find local groups in your city or state, or join a national group. You can also create your own group if you’re not part of a social network. In your own group, you can also create Power Grups and other tools to help you find others in your industry who are looking to start a business or are in the same boat as you.

Keep an eye out on relevant business channels

Whether you’re an avid follower of social media or not, you’ll still notice a lot of chatter and news about Networking. There are tons of opportunities to Network online, and you never know what might happen. You can also look for ways to Network in advance of events that might feature Networking. For example, check out the LinkedIn groups for your industry and see if there are any events that might feature Networking. There’s a good chance there is, and you can use the anticipation of that event to get ready for Networking. Depending on where you work, there may be ways to Network with other professionals outside of traditional work situations. Nowadays, networking means more than just sharing a drink with a few friends after work. It can also mean getting to know people through online channels.
